Lesson Overview
Lesson 21 is dedicated to two things: (1) Crafting a 1-minute pitch for our idea that can be used at the startup weekend (and elsewhere), and (2) A mid-year review and quick evaluation of the entrepreneurship club.
🔔
Important note — when to run
This lesson is done in the week preceding the startup weekend event. It does not have to be the fourth lesson. Alternatively, if the club will not participate in the startup weekend, only the second part of the lesson (mid-year reflection) can be done.
🎯
Purpose of the lesson
Participants leave with a ready one-minute pitch, knowing what to expect from the startup weekend — and with a clear picture of what they have learned so far.
Activities — Part 1: Startup Weekend Prep
The upcoming startup weekend is one of the major highlights of the year. Traditionally all participants really enjoy it and get very motivated to pursue their projects. We want to get all the participants of our clubs to attend.
1
Invite and explain the startup weekend
The mentor invites the participants (another opportunity to convince those still undecided), then briefly explains what the startup weekend is and why it is important:
- A gathering of all club members from many countries
- An exercise in true startup building: 3 days to take ideas to the market and develop the product
- Teams present their projects to a panel of investors who might choose to support them
- No sleep, all action for 3 days and nights straight — this is often how startup life looks
- A lot of like-minded people and a good chance to get to know them
- A large number of mentors to help you out
2
Show last year's event video
The mentor shows the video from last year's event (available on the uSchool/Ustvarjalnik website) to provide real context and inspiration.
3
Explain what to expect from the event
The mentor clarifies what to expect:
- Opportunity to build the product with the help of mentors and students from other clubs — lots of programmers, designers, and techie people invited
- Presentation in front of investors at the end — the first opportunity to impress them
- The panel selects winners with prizes awarded
- To bring their idea, they will need to present it with a 1-minute pitch at the very beginning. Other participants listen and join the teams they like
- It is possible to join another team or come without a pitch — everyone should come, even those not part of a project team
4
Discuss participants' expectations and plans
The mentor asks participants about their expectations. Ambitious ones should begin to plan what they will do at the event. If they will be building a prototype, they should consider arranging the supplies necessary to work at the event.
5
Craft the pitch with the teams
The mentor works with the teams to craft the pitches. See the "Pitch Structure" section below. Be sure to write it down.
6
Rehearsals and delivery tips
Decide who will present on stage and have a few rehearsals. Key points:
- Prepare well in advance — this is by far the most important factor
- Talk into the microphone and have it close to the mouth
- Show some passion (but don't overkill it)
- Smile, have a confident pose and keep eye contact with the audience
The 1-Minute Pitch Structure
The pitch should last exactly 1 minute and follow this structure (4 parts). If you are able to explain it in a couple of sentences, you definitely understand it.
01
Problem
What is the need for the product? Who has this need? This is usually told through a story that explains the ideal customer's problem.
02
Решение
Solution
What concretely do you propose to build? A clear, simple and concise explanation of your product that everyone can understand.
03
Business Model
How you propose to make money? No more than a sentence — clarification of what the revenue stream is.
04
Who You Need
A concrete ask for other participants to join — designers, coders, techies, etc.
🌟
Mentor note — students' apprehension
Students will surely be apprehensive — how to explain all this in under a minute? The answer is that if you are able to explain it in a couple of sentences, you definitely understand it. Give an example if necessary. The more compelling the pitch, the bigger the chance they will get a great team.
Activities — Part 2: Mid-Year Reflection
The purpose of reflecting as a team is for members to express thoughts, feelings and opinions about a shared experience, to build openness and trust in the team, and to draw out key learnings and insights. Team members generally sit in a circle.
1
Session guidelines
Before the discussion starts, the mentor provides guidelines: participants should speak from their individual perspective ("I-statements"), avoid generalisations like "everybody" and "some people", and practise active listening when others are speaking.
2
Reflection questions — write them on the whiteboard
Write the following questions on the whiteboard so they are easily visible:
"What happened during the experience?"
"How did I feel and what were my reactions?"
"What insights or conclusions can I draw from the experience?"
"What actions can I take based on what I learned?"
3
Individual reflection (5 minutes)
Ask team members to reflect on the questions individually and in silence, writing on post-its for about 5 minutes. Put some gentle music on if appropriate.
4
Sharing in circle
Bring the full group back to the circle. Invite team members to share their reflections one-by-one, either going round the circle or randomly. Encourage them to go deeper into thoughts and feelings, not just read out what they have on their post-its.
5
Close the session
When the time is up or it feels like the right time to end, close the session. Thank the team members for their engagement and participation.
📝
Mentor note — send a summary
Write a short summary of the reflection session and send it to the HQ where all mentor feedback is gathered and reviewed.

Tip for the mentor — school management invitation
The school has already received an official invitation to attend the presentations on the last day of the startup weekend, but it is highly recommended for the mentor to visit the school management and invite them personally. The mentor should say that the participants are doing great and will present a fantastic product with a chance for a good result.
