🔑
Three Reasons to Start Small
1. Credibility — starting small gives the startup proof points to attract more people, resources, and funding later.
2. Learning from experience — you can adapt your offering before you have invested too much.
3. Flexibility — you can adapt to the needs of the customers without having to tear everything down and start over.

Ideas Change Over Time
Most business ideas change dramatically over time — and that is completely normal. Therefore: don't be afraid of idea generation (first ideas are nearly always outlandish); we are not looking for perfect ideas, merely ideas good enough to develop further; the most important factor is whether you like it — that will give you the perseverance to change it and grow it over a long period of time.

Activities — Step by Step

1
Show the video and kick off discussion
The mentor shows the video about what the business world looks like today (available in the mentor kit). This kick-starts a discussion about what possibilities are available to students today. The mentor may also deliver a short talk about a business idea that is fascinating in their opinion.
2
Present the case stories and key principles
Present the five examples (eBay, Zappos, Walmart, AirBnB, Dropbox) and discuss with the group. Highlight three principles: start small; ideas change dramatically over time; follow your enthusiasm.
3
Split into groups of 4-6
Split the participants into groups of 4-6. Draw grids of roughly 30 squares on flipchart paper, one for each group (you may want to do this in advance of the session).
4
Introduce the apple exercise
Explain that they will work in complete silence for 10-15 minutes to draw as many different kinds of apple as they can. Starting in the top-left square, the group members take turns drawing apples. No apple can be the same. Relaxing background music may be appropriate. The exercise trains divergent thinking and demonstrates three creativity principles.
5
Run the exercise (10-15 min)
Give the groups pens/markers — ideally with different colours in each group. Start the music. Stop the exercise when all of the grids and squares are filled, or the time has run out.
6
Small-group reflection (2-3 min)
Give the groups 2-3 minutes to discuss the experience and draw out learnings. Suggested reflection questions: How was it to do this exercise? What can we learn about creativity? What principles can we draw out?
7
Whole-group debrief — arrange grids in a horseshoe
Bring the groups together, collating their grids in one place and standing in a horseshoe around them. Ask the same questions to the whole group. Highlight the commonalities between the groups. Bring out the three key insights: quantity is a condition for quality; building on the ideas of others; the ideas we come up with are usually all the same.
8
Idea book round — closing the session
Form a circle. Everyone shares the ideas they have in their idea book. Have an open discussion about every one (time permitting). Questions to ask about each idea: Could you apply this basic idea to a different market/customer base/geography/industry? How would a different technology (from session 8) change/improve the idea? How would a different business model (from session 9) change/improve the idea? How would you start this? (starting small — from session 10)
🎨
Exercise Variation
You can use this exercise with something other than apples for more practical application: draw 30 logos, write 30 taglines, draw 30 new cars...

Tips for the Mentor

⚠️
Return to the Idea Books Regularly
The mentor should remind the participants about the idea books in the following lessons. You can return to them often during the remainder of the year.
🔄
If Teams Are Stuck for Business Concepts
If the teams disprove or reject any business concepts they are working on and need a fresh start, get the entire entrepreneurship club together and bring out the idea books. Go through them and brainstorm. Finding the next idea should be easy.
🎯
Target for the Idea Books
At this stage the goal is to have at least 15-20 promising business concepts you can work with and turn into actual businesses in the future. This is a fallback — if the initial concept fails, you will be able to come back to the idea books and simply start over.
🌟
Mentor's Personal Contribution
It is very beneficial if the mentor also delivers a short talk about a business idea that is fascinating in their own opinion. This makes the discussion livelier and demonstrates that enthusiasm is contagious.

PURPOSE

De-mystify the process of starting a company by showing examples of how famous companies began. The trick: all of them started small, first focusing on a smaller problem in a large market, then expanding. The session combines three activities: (1) video + case story discussion; (2) a silent apple-drawing exercise to demonstrate divergent thinking and creativity principles; (3) an idea book round where participants share and cross-pollinate their business concepts using questions from sessions 8 (technology), 9 (business models), and 10 (starting small).

KEY CONCEPTS
  • Start small — every great company solved a small problem in a large market before expanding; starting small gives credibility, learning opportunities, and flexibility
  • Five case stories — eBay (PEZ figures), Zappos (buying shoes at brick-and-mortar and shipping to customers), Walmart (family shop), AirBnB (air mattresses in a room), Dropbox (YouTube demo video)
  • Ideas change dramatically over time — this is normal and desirable; first ideas are nearly always outlandish; enthusiasm for the idea is the key factor
  • Apple exercise — divergent thinking — groups draw 30 different apples in silence (turns, one per square); reveals: quantity is a condition for quality; we build on others' ideas; we usually think of the same ideas
  • Idea book round — each participant shares their idea book concepts; discussion applies four lenses: different market, different technology (session 8), different business model (session 9), how to start small (session 10)
  • Fallback target — aim for 15-20 promising concepts across the group's idea books as a safety net if initial business concepts fail
MATERIALS REQUIRED
  • Presentation + video — from mentor kit; about what the business world looks like today
  • Projector and computer — for video and presentation
  • Flipchart paper or large whiteboard — pre-draw grids of ~30 squares, one per group
  • Post-its, A4 paper, coloured markers — different colours per group for the apple exercise
  • Speakers (optional) — relaxing background music during the silent drawing phase
SESSION FLOW
  • Step 1 — Show video (mentor kit); discussion on today's business possibilities; mentor shares inspiring personal idea
  • Step 2 — Conclude discussion: focus on starting small; ideas change; enthusiasm is key
  • Step 3 — Introduce apple exercise: divergent thinking, creativity principles
  • Step 4 — Split into groups of 4-6; distribute pre-drawn 30-square grids
  • Step 5 — Explain rules: silence, take turns, no two apples the same, 10-15 min
  • Step 6 — Run exercise (different marker colours, optional music); stop when grids full or time up
  • Step 7 — Small-group reflection (2-3 min); then horseshoe debrief; surface three insights
  • Step 8 — Idea book round in circle; open discussion with four guiding questions per idea
DISCUSSION QUESTIONS — IDEA BOOKS
  • Could you apply this basic idea to a different market / customer base / geography / industry?
  • How would a different technology (from session 8) change or improve the idea?
  • How would a different business model (from session 9) change or improve the idea?
  • How would you start this? (starting small — from session 10)
CHECKLIST
  • Prepare presentation and video from mentor kit; check projector and computer
  • Show video; kick off discussion on today's business possibilities
  • Present five case stories and three principles of starting small
  • Divide into groups of 4-6; pre-draw 30-square grids on flipchart
  • Run silent apple exercise (10-15 min, different colours per group, optional music)
  • Small-group reflection (2-3 min); whole-group horseshoe debrief; surface three creativity insights
  • Run idea book round in circle; apply four guiding questions to each idea
  • Remind participants to keep idea books; commit to revisiting them in future sessions
  • Verify group has 15-20 promising business concepts across idea books
MENTOR TIPS
  • Idea books are a safety net — if any business concept fails later in the year, return to the idea books as a fresh start
  • Return to idea books regularly — remind participants in following lessons; they are a recurring resource
  • Apple exercise variation — can use logos, taglines, or new car designs instead of apples for more practical application
  • Mentor's personal story — sharing a personally fascinating business idea makes the discussion significantly more engaging
  • Purpose of idea book discussion — generation, not evaluation; we are not judging ideas yet, only multiplying them
