Embrace failure. Take risks. Learn that the only real defeat is not trying at all — Lesson 6 of 32 of Teenovator.
Lesson Overview
This lesson deals with embracing and accepting failure. People are afraid to take risks, which is usually precisely what holds them back. The participants will be challenged to dare greatly.
Two parts: Game 1 — Epic Failure (classroom intro + outdoor challenge, 30 min + debrief) and Game 2 — Daring Greatly (goal-setting + take-home assignment for the whole week).
"Failing forward" —
"Failing forward" — failure is not the end, it's feedback. The more risks you take, the more you succeed. The only real failure is not trying at all.

The activity was developed by the Transformative Action Institute and has been done all over the world with transformative results. Included as the conclusion of the soft skills section — one of the high points of the year.
Activity 1 — The Epic Failure Game
For many students, this is the most fun, powerful, and liberating. It's all about realizing that failure is not just normal, it's something to be welcomed!
A man wanted to ask a female acquaintance out on a date but was too timid. A psychiatrist gave him unexpected advice: "I want you to collect as many rejections as possible in the next month. Your goal is to get rejected 75 times."
The result? The man learned to overcome his fear of rejection. And more — he found that many women actually said yes. In the end, he failed at getting rejected, because he was succeeding too often!
Put everyone into groups of 3–4 people. Go outside, somewhere where there are lots of people walking around. Their goal is to fail as often as they can in 30 minutes. They can interpret those instructions in any way that they wish.
Forbidden:
- Anything illegal
- Anything potentially harmful or dangerous to themselves or others
- Anything sexual
- Anything that harasses others
- Anything culturally offensive
Otherwise — no rules. They count how many times they fail and succeed. They take photos or videos of their attempts.
Upon returning, invite the teams to share the number of failures and successes. Write the tally on the whiteboard. Announce the winning group — the one with the most failures.
Discussion questions:
- What was the most epic fail encountered?
- Did the sting of rejection go away after the first few times?
- Did they get more bold, resilient, and self-confident?
- How many times did people actually say yes — were they surprised?
Key insight: Several studies show that people underestimate by as much as 50 percent the willingness of others to respond to a direct request for help and assistance. People naturally want to help others.
Daring Greatly"Activity 2 — The Daring Greatly Game
In the previous game, participants were taking risks about things that didn't really matter much to them. Now comes the real challenge — to dare greatly for the things that truly make a difference in their lives.
Ask the participants to list all the most important fears they could tackle over the next two weeks — things that, if they succeeded, would help them advance significantly in personal and professional goals.
Ask: What great dreams could they risk? What are they procrastinating on? What big, hairy, audacious goals are they avoiding for fear of failure?
Examples: writing a summer job application, researching options for studying abroad, asking someone out for a date...
Then: have them list all the specific small steps they could take to complete each goal.
For each activity that scares you, measure two things on a scale of 1–10:
- Importance score — how meaningful and important it is; how much it could help you move towards your goals
- Boldness score — how much fear it involves; how much you would rather avoid and procrastinate on it
Then take action and multiply the two numbers. Important: outcomes are irrelevant! You score points just for making the effort — whether you succeed or fail.
This strategy is known as "little bets" — small wagers where the only way to find out if something works is to take action!

Conclude the lesson by giving out envelopes with further instructions. You may write the names of the participants on each envelope for extra effect. The letter inside needs no further explanation.
The assignment for the week: Play the Daring Greatly game every day and bring the final score back to class next week.
The entire next lesson will be dedicated to a detailed debrief and celebrating their successes.

Daring Greatly"
"Only those who dare to fail greatly can ever achieve greatly." — Robert F. Kennedy
The Daring Greatly Game
"Only those who dare to fail greatly can ever achieve greatly." — Robert F. Kennedy
The game is very simple. Each day, you choose to go after the things that might scare you. You dare greatly to move towards your dreams. Your goal is to fail as often as possible!
If you fail 100 times, three positive outcomes will likely come out of it: (1) You will also succeed many times; (2) You will start to overcome your fears of failure; (3) You will learn many new things that help you grow and develop.
Rules: only things that are safe, legal, and respectful of others — steps outside your comfort zone, but without physical or psychological harm.
Your task for this week is to play the Daring Greatly game every day and bring the final score back to class next week. Have fun!
Mentor Notes
This lesson is perhaps the most important of the whole year, therefore very detailed instructions are provided. Do not rush it.
It is particularly important that you start the Daring Greatly game immediately after the first game to have the most impact. Don't lose momentum!
This is the first time you are giving students assignments to take home. Since homework is not something young people enjoy, you need to be extra mindful to present this activity in a compelling way. Without individual work at home, starting a business later will never work.
Be mindful not to give away that you expect them to actually attempt this before they start writing the goals down. Let them believe this is merely a mental exercise at first.
Consider cultural taboos and national norms of etiquette. This exercise has only been met with laughter and astonishment wherever it has been done — but please consider your audience so it is not offensive or inappropriate in any way.
It might be wise to tell the students a week or even two in advance that the session will take a little longer than 1 hour, so they can arrange their schedules accordingly.

Agent Context
This lesson deals with embracing and accepting failure. People are afraid to take risks, which is usually precisely what holds them back. The participants will be challenged to dare greatly. It is included as the conclusion of the soft skills exploration and is considered one of the high points of the year. The lesson introduces "failing forward" — failure as feedback rather than defeat — through two sequential games: the Epic Failure Game (outdoor, 30 min) and the Daring Greatly Game (goal-setting + week-long home assignment with a scoring system).
- Failing forward — failure is not the end; it's feedback and growth
- Fear of rejection — people underestimate by ~50% others' willingness to help; the best way to defeat fear is to confront it directly
- Epic Failure Game — groups of 3–4 go outside for 30 min with the goal of failing as many times as possible; they count failures AND successes
- Daring Greatly Game — participants list their real fears/goals and take specific small steps ("little bets") during the following week
- Scoring system — Importance (1–10) × Boldness (1–10) = total score; outcomes are irrelevant, effort scores points
- Little bets (Peter Sims) — small risk-taking wagers where the only way to find out if they work is to take action
- Kennedy quote — "Only those who dare to fail greatly can ever achieve greatly." — Robert Kennedy
- Step 1 (Game 1) — Mentor tells psychiatrist rejection story; introduces Epic Failure Game rules
- Step 2 (Game 1) — Groups of 3–4 go outside, 30 min, goal: fail as many times as possible; forbidden: illegal, harmful, sexual, harassing, culturally offensive
- Step 3 (Game 1) — Debrief: tally on whiteboard, winning group (most failures), discussion questions
- Step 1 (Game 2) — Kennedy quote on whiteboard; explain context of "running towards fears"
- Step 2 (Game 2) — Participants write goals + small steps (10 min)
- Step 3 (Game 2) — Explain scoring system: Importance × Boldness; outcomes irrelevant
- Step 4 (Game 2) — Assign as real homework for the week; hand out envelopes
- Step 5 (Game 2) — Announce next session = full debrief of results
- Pre-prepared envelopes with Daring Greatly worksheets — one per participant
- Whiteboard + marker (for tally and Kennedy quote)
- At least a few participants with phone cameras
- Outdoor public space near the school with people walking around
- 90-minute session pre-agreed with school administration
- Do NOT reveal homework assignment before participants write their goals
- Start Game 2 immediately after Game 2 debrief — do not lose momentum
- Consider cultural taboos when running Epic Failure Game
- Present the home assignment compellingly — this sets expectations for future individual work (business start)
- Tell participants 1–2 weeks in advance that the session is 90 minutes
